About the eBook

The Tatler (Vol. 1-4) gathers one of the defining achievements of early eighteenth-century periodical prose, uniting social observation, moral reflection, literary criticism, urban satire, and the art of polite conversation. Framed through the persona of Isaac Bickerstaff, these essays move from coffeehouse gossip and theatrical commentary to meditations on manners, taste, friendship, gender, and public virtue. Their stylistic range—witty, urbane, didactic, ironic—helped shape the modern essay as a flexible form responsive to everyday life. Produced chiefly by Richard Steele with important contributions from Joseph Addison, the collection stands at the heart of Augustan literary culture and the rise of a reading public in commercial London. Its pages reflect the energies of the coffeehouse, the periodical press, and a society increasingly concerned with civility, reason, and moral refinement. Together, these voices helped establish a model of prose that linked entertainment with ethical instruction and social critique. This four-volume collection is essential for readers interested in the origins of journalism, essay writing, and modern public discourse. It offers a rich encounter with the intellectual and social world of the early eighteenth century, while its observations on character, conduct, and culture remain strikingly readable. The Tatler invites sustained exploration of a formative literary dialogue whose influence extends far beyond its original moment.
