About the eBook

The Light of Scarthey is a late-Victorian romance of isolation, loyalty, and moral illumination, set amid the windswept austerity of a coastal stronghold whose beacon becomes both literal guide and symbolic centre. Castle blends Gothic atmosphere with the manners of historical fiction: storm, secrecy, inheritance, and passionate restraint are shaped in a prose style at once decorative and disciplined. The novel belongs to the fin-de-siècle revival of romance, looking back to chivalric feeling while registering modern anxieties about duty and desire. Egerton Castle, an Anglo-Irish writer, critic, and celebrated authority on fencing, was drawn throughout his career to codes of honour, aristocratic memory, and the dramatic possibilities of the past. His antiquarian interests and cosmopolitan education helped form a fiction attentive to gesture, costume, setting, and moral ceremony. These preoccupations are evident here, where character is tested less by spectacle than by fidelity, renunciation, and the difficult claims of love. Readers who value atmospheric historical romance, finely wrought emotional tension, and fiction shaped by old-world ideals will find The Light of Scarthey rewarding. It is especially recommended to admirers of Victorian romance who appreciate symbolic landscapes and disciplined sentiment.
