The Tribes and Castes of the Central Provinces of India (Vol. 1-4) (Annotated)
About the eBook
The Tribes and Castes of the Central Provinces of India is a monumental four-volume ethnographic survey of the peoples, occupations, customs, myths, and social hierarchies of central India. Written in the descriptive, classificatory prose of early twentieth-century colonial anthropology, it combines administrative observation, folklore, linguistic notes, ritual description, and social taxonomy. Its literary context is that of the imperial gazetteer and ethnological compendium: richly detailed and ambitious, yet shaped by the assumptions and categories of its age. Robert Vane Russell was a British civil servant in the Indian Civil Service, and his administrative work in the Central Provinces gave him sustained access to local records, census materials, and informants. The project reflects the colonial state's desire to understand, order, and govern India's social complexity. At the same time, Russell's compilation preserves a vast body of cultural detail, often drawn from oral traditions and everyday practice. This work is recommended for readers interested in Indian social history, anthropology, colonial knowledge, and caste studies. It should be read critically, but it remains an indispensable historical source.
