About the eBook

Spain in 1830 (Vol. 1 & 2) is a richly observed travel narrative that records Henry D. Inglis's journey through a country poised between imperial memory and modern crisis. Combining topographical description, social commentary, political reflection, and anecdotal encounter, Inglis writes in the lucid, inquisitive style of the nineteenth-century British traveller. His Spain is not merely picturesque: it is a nation of roads, inns, churches, cities, customs, poverty, devotion, and latent unrest, situated in the uneasy aftermath of the Napoleonic wars and the absolutist restoration of Ferdinand VII. Henry D. Inglis, a Scottish writer who also published under the name Derwent Conway, was known for his acute travel books on Europe. His interest in Spain reflects both Romantic fascination with the Peninsula and a more empirical desire to understand its institutions, manners, and political condition. Writing before the Carlist Wars transformed Spanish public life, Inglis captured a moment of historical suspension with unusual immediacy. This work is highly recommended to readers of travel literature, Iberian history, and nineteenth-century cultural observation. It offers both the pleasures of vivid description and the value of a perceptive contemporary document.
