Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (Annotated)
About the eBook
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures is Mary Baker Eddy's foundational exposition of Christian Science, first published in 1875 and repeatedly revised to clarify its metaphysical theology. Combining biblical exegesis, spiritual autobiography, and systematic religious argument, the work proposes that divine Mind is the ultimate reality and that healing follows from understanding spiritual law. Its style is earnest, aphoristic, and polemical, situated within nineteenth-century American religious innovation, transcendental currents, and debates over medicine, revelation, and scriptural authority. Eddy (1821–1910), a New England religious thinker and reformer, wrote from a life marked by illness, bereavement, and an intense search for spiritual healing. Her reported recovery after reading the Gospels became central to her conviction that Jesus' works demonstrated a universal science of Christianity. As founder of the Church of Christ, Scientist, she shaped a movement that joined biblical literal seriousness with metaphysical interpretation and practical healing. This book is recommended for readers interested in American religious history, women's authorship, alternative medicine, and the evolution of modern spiritual thought. Whether approached devotionally, critically, or historically, it remains an indispensable text for understanding Christian Science and the broader landscape of nineteenth-century faith.
