About the eBook

Lorenzo de' Medici, the Magnificent is a richly documented historical biography that situates its subject at the center of Florentine politics, humanist learning, diplomacy, and artistic patronage. Reumont presents Lorenzo not merely as a princely ruler without a crown, but as a statesman-poet whose influence shaped the intellectual climate of the Italian Renaissance. Written in the nineteenth-century tradition of archival, narrative history, the work combines careful political analysis with an admiration for Renaissance culture and its personalities. Alfred von Reumont, a German diplomat, historian, and long-time observer of Italian affairs, brought to the subject both scholarly discipline and intimate familiarity with Italy's historical landscape. His diplomatic career in Florence and Rome gave him access to archives, local traditions, and the political sensibilities necessary to interpret Medicean power. His interest in the interplay between culture and statecraft made Lorenzo an ideal subject. This book is recommended to readers seeking a serious, elegant account of Renaissance Florence and the man who helped define its golden age. It will especially reward students of Italian history, art patronage, humanism, and political biography.
