About the eBook

In The Tryst, Grace Livingston Hill shapes a romance around a charged meeting whose emotional and spiritual consequences ripple through the lives of her characters. The novel blends courtship plot, moral testing, and providential design, using the clear, melodramatic, and devoutly earnest style that made Hill a central figure in early twentieth-century American inspirational fiction. Its world is one of social vulnerability, hidden worth, and redemptive love, set within the conventions of popular domestic romance. Hill's background helps explain the novel's moral architecture. Born in 1865 into a Presbyterian family and influenced by the religious fiction of her aunt Isabella "Pansy" Alden, she wrote from within a culture that regarded fiction as a vehicle for ethical formation. Widowed young and often writing to support her family, Hill repeatedly imagined heroines and heroes who must choose faith, integrity, and sacrificial affection over worldly security. The Tryst is recommended for readers interested in Christian romance, sentimental fiction, and the history of women's popular writing. It offers not psychological modernism, but a sincere, disciplined vision of love governed by conscience and grace.
