About the eBook

D. H. Lawrence's The White Peacock (1911) is a richly sensuous first novel set in the Nottinghamshire countryside, where rural beauty, erotic longing, and social constraint entwine. Through the narrator Cyril Beardsall's recollections, the novel traces the emotional entanglements of Lettie Beardsall, George Saxton, and Leslie Tempest, opposing instinctive vitality to class ambition and conventional marriage. Its lyrical natural description, symbolic use of birds, seasons, and landscape, and debt to late-Victorian realism and fin-de-siècle aestheticism announce many of Lawrence's later preoccupations. Lawrence, born in 1885 in the mining town of Eastwood, drew deeply on the tensions of his own background: the contrast between industrial modernity and the living rhythms of nature, between working-class rootedness and middle-class aspiration. The novel reflects his early formation as teacher, poet, and observer of Midlands life, as well as his emerging belief that emotional truth is often betrayed by social respectability. Readers interested in Lawrence's mature masterpieces will find The White Peacock indispensable. Though apprentice in structure, it is already powerful, atmospheric, and intellectually suggestive—a compelling introduction to one of modern literature's most searching explorers of desire, class, and the natural world.
