The History of Rome (Vol. 1-4) (Annotated)
About the eBook
The History of Rome (Vol. 1-4) presents Livy's monumental account of Rome's rise from its legendary foundation to the formative crises of the Republic. Blending myth, moral exemplum, political narrative, and dramatic set-piece speeches, Livy writes in a richly rhetorical Augustan style that transforms history into a meditation on civic virtue, ambition, piety, and decline. These volumes illuminate the Roman imagination at work: Romulus and Remus, the expulsion of kings, republican institutions, wars, betrayals, and acts of sacrifice become part of a grand national epic. Titus Livius, known as Livy, was born in Patavium in 59 BCE and wrote during the reign of Augustus, when Rome was recovering from civil war and redefining its identity. Though not a statesman or soldier, Livy possessed a profound moral and literary vision. His history reflects both nostalgia for ancestral discipline and anxiety about the corruption of public life. This work is essential for readers of classical history, political thought, and ancient literature. It rewards those seeking not merely facts about Rome, but insight into how Romans understood power, memory, destiny, and the ethical burden of empire.

About the Author
Titus Livius (59 BC-AD 17) was a Roman historian. He wrote a monumental history of Rome and the Roman people – Ab Urbe Condita Libri (Books from the Foundation of the City) – covering the period from the earliest legends of Rome before the traditional foundation in 753 BC through the reign of Augustus in Livy's own lifetime. He was on familiar terms with members of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, advising Augustus's grandnephew, the future emperor Claudius, as a young man not long before 14 AD in a letter to take up the writing of history.
