About the eBook

George Alfred Henty (1832-1902) was an outstanding English writer, journalist and traveler. In his youth, he fought in the Crimean War as part of the British army, and later covered major armed conflicts as a war correspondent. At the end of the 19th century, Henty was one of the most popular authors of historical adventure fiction. Since 1868, he wrote about 80 novels, including Under Drake's Flag (1883), The Lion of the North (1885) and many others.

This edition presents two of his iconic works. The Lion of St. Mark takes the reader to one of the most difficult periods in the history of the Venetian Republic, when it found itself in mortal danger, fighting against Genoa, Padua and the Kingdom of Hungary at once. Heroism, political intrigue and naval battles are intertwined in this action-packed novel.

"St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre" is dedicated to the dramatic events of the religious wars in France in the second half of the 16th century. The Catholic League is preparing a conspiracy against the Huguenot queen Jeanne d'Albret and her son Henry of Navarre. The story centers on the young nobleman Philip Fletcher, who is entrusted with a secret mission: to deliver an important message from Admiral Coligny to the queen. But clouds are gathering in Paris, and Philip will have to face the horrific massacre of St. Bartholomew's Day...
