Sleep peacefully in your final resting place, for you now lie beneath the soil, nourishing the land of Egypt with the fragrance of your conscience and the trees of poetry. The poetry you carried with you on the day of your departure, before you brought it to us, has now become fragrant, sprouting and branching out on the land that contains your great body.
I see you, my master and teacher, emulating Jalal ad-Din Rumi, Farid ad-Din Attar, Ibn al-Farid, al-Niffari, and others. You were bred from this raw material, and from the same nectar you were nurtured.
You were initially a great poet of resistance, and you spent the prime of your life behind bars, accused of loving and adoring Egypt. For you, Egypt represented Arabism, a young civilization, and the future. Experience both behind and outside the bars matured you, and poetry for you became an absolute jihad for the sake of God, for the sake of truth, justice, and noble, sublime principles. Your goal became pure poetry, and the goal of your poetry was to educate humanity, to reformulate it in a manner befitting it, to be a child of the highest heavens, of the divine power that created it. Like Jalal al-Din, Ibn Arabi, and other great figures, your poetry has become the true culture, which is a light from the light of God.

(1938-2011)
كاتب وروائي مصري كبير، ترك رصيدًا وافرًا من الكتابة الأدبية المتميزة، ما بين الرواية والقصة والدراسات النقدية والمسرحية والتاريخية.
حصل على العديد من الجوائز أبرزها جائزة الدولة التشجيعية في الآداب عام 1980، ووسام العلوم والفنون من الطبقة الأولى عام 1980، وجائزة أفضل رواية عربية عن (وكالة عطية) عام 1993، وجائزة التفوق الأولى عن اتحاد الكُتاب المصريين، وجائزة نجيب محفوظ من الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة، وجائزة الدولة التقديرية في الآداب عام 2005، كما رشحته مؤسسة "إمباسادورز" الكندية للحصول على جائزة نوبل للآداب.
