The author documents the emptiness of the lives of her heroines, realistic women who aspire to learn in order to be free, work, and choose husbands who don't place obstacles in their paths and deprive them of their legitimate freedom. Educated women pay a heavy price, or semi-educated women, not because of their own shortcomings, but because of the harshness of life's circumstances.
Life, as it appears in this collection, is nothing more than broken mirrors, and the facts are utterly ridiculous, as are the names of the protagonists, who do not fit their meaning. It is a game of circles, and each circle leads to another.
