The Iliad - Homer
About the eBook
Historians have differed over the name of the author of the Iliad, but they agree that "Homer" is a nickname given to him for a momentous event that occurred during his lifetime, by which he became known. His name was neglected, as happened with many of our poets whose nicknames prevailed over their names, such as Tarafa ibn al-Abd, al-Nabigha, al-Farazdaq, al-Akhtal, al-Mutanabbi, and Abu al-Ala. Writers have different opinions about this nickname. Therefore, they hovered around the Greek word and began to deduce whatever meanings they wished from it. Some say that since the word "Homer" means "hostage," this nickname prevailed for him because he was taken prisoner in war. Others say that he was taken to Colophon. Others say that he was captured by the Persians. Others say that the meaning of the name is "the speaker in the assembly," meaning the orator or advisor. Everything that can be deduced from this interpretation can be conclusively agreed upon with our author.
