About the eBook

There is no doubt that the development of ancient arts in the Near East was done by the Iranians, and they subsequently had the largest share and highest influence in Islamic arts. The fact is that the Turks adopted most of their artistic styles from them, while the Arabs themselves did not have ancient artistic traditions. Ibn Khaldun included in his introduction a chapter on "the fact that buildings and factories in the Islamic nation are few in relation to its capacity and to those of the states that came before it." He mentioned in it that the reason for this was the Arabs' nomadism and their distance from crafts, and that religion was at first a deterrent against exaggeration in construction and extravagance in it for purposes other than those intended. "But when the era of religion and the caution in such purposes became distant, and the nature of kingship and luxury prevailed, and the Arabs used the Persian nation and took from them crafts and buildings, and the conditions of ease and luxury called them to them, then they built buildings and factories."
