My Diaries 1889-1951
About the eBook
Abdul Rahman Al-Rafei (February 8, 1889 - December 3, 1966), the author of these memoirs, was an Egyptian historian who studied the history of the nationalist movement in modern Egyptian history. His most famous work is the 15-volume chronicle from the late 18th century and early 19th century until the 1950s. He was a man of thought and pen. Al-Rafei says about his memoirs: "It is not my right, as I chronicle the nationalist movement in its various modern eras, to insert a long discussion about myself. This is an undoubted right, but is it not my right, after having translated hundreds of figures in the era I chronicled, which spans more than 150 years of modern Egyptian history, to write about myself? The predecessors did the same... One of the most difficult things for a person is to write about himself; this could be interpreted as boasting or selfishness. However, I never intended any of that. Rather, my intention is that such memoirs contain facts and thoughts that cannot be contained in history books. Nevertheless, they may be useful to those who want to understand the era in which I lived and witnessed its events and facts. Then I see that publishing them may be a contribution on my part to forming a good citizen. I may be right in this opinion or wrong, but this is the goal I seek."
