Arabic renewal
About the eBook
Today, the Arabic language connects tens of millions of native speakers, carrying a shared cultural heritage that spans the Arab world. However, this geographical and historical expanse has not exempted it from the stagnation it has endured for centuries, necessitating serious efforts to revive it and make it more resilient to contemporary developments. In light of this transformation, two contrasting trends have emerged. One views the rules of the language, as established by its forefathers, as a sacred framework that should not be transgressed. The other views language as a living organism that must evolve with life, and that linguistic rules must be revised to adapt to modern requirements without compromising their essence and authenticity. Early linguists were aware of the inevitability of linguistic change and devised several methods to regulate Arabic, including Arabization, coinage, derivation, and augmentation—mechanisms that can still be employed in creating modern terminology. While the rules established in the past were a strong fortress protecting Arabic from foreign interference, today's need calls for expanding the scope of linguistic interpretation, so that Arabic remains a language of knowledge and thought, capable of keeping pace with the demands of the times without losing its identity.
