With the stories of the owners of the letters, which they wrote and which, like them, were lost at sea, but they call for other letters, intersecting like the fates of these strangers. They are immigrants, displaced persons, or displaced exiles, orphans of their countries that were broken by days that turned their lives into a "Basel" game.
There is no certainty in the novel. The one who killed is not a criminal, nor is the prostitute a prostitute. It is, as in our time, an area of ​​great doubt, confusion, the erasure of borders... and the loss of the first places and homes.
