And he manipulated hearts and thoughts in such a way that the people of his time imagined that hearts were standing on his pen and that souls were agitated by the effect of what flowed from his ink. And scholars in France still wonder how a man like this, whose industry was delicate and whose habit was youth and spinning, was in charge of the tasks of strict politics.
