After an apprenticeship as a bookseller in Hanover (1990-1992), Markus Seidel studied German and philosophy in Hanover, Vienna and Berlin. In the last semester of his studies in Berlin he wrote his first novel "Umwege erhöhen die Ortskenntnis", which made him famous throughout Germany in 1998 and was highly praised by the critics. After that he devoted himself exclusively to writing.
